Still I Rise: Scaling Up GBV Support for South Asian, Black, and Arab Women (2024-2025)
The Still I Rise: Scaling Up GBV Support for South Asian, Black, and Arab Women program, led by MAWS and Elmwood Community Resource Centre, is designed to address barriers faced by racialized women in accessing gender-based violence (GBV) services. This initiative enhances community support through intersectional needs assessments, sector partnerships, and peer-support leadership training. The project also focuses on knowledge sharing and culturally responsive evaluation to improve GBV services across Manitoba by addressing the lack of awareness about the local legal system and structural barriers that prevent racialized women from accessing GBV services. This project aims to improve the GBV sector at all levels through knowledge mobilization and sharing of best practices.
Symposium, Empower, Connect, Inspire: Building the Future through Shelter Collaboration (2024-Ongoing)
Our first Shelter Symposium, Empower, Connect, Inspire: Building the Future through Shelter Collaboration, was held on November 20 and 21, 2024, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. With over 20 Manitoba family violence shelters present, the Symposium addressed shelters’ ongoing challenges regarding the following topics:
- Fundraising
- Mental Health and Substance Abuse
- Shelter-to-shelter transfers
- Culture Shock
- Data Collection
- Indigenous Wellness
Following this event, participants started forming working groups to brainstorm solutions for each area and maintain momentum and connections.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to WAGE Canada and Manitoba for their invaluable support in funding this project through the National Action Plan, to Circling Buffalo for their partnership, and to Indigenous Services Canada for its commitment to fostering meaningful change and advancing equity.
