The Manitoba Association of Women’s Shelters (MAWS) was proud to participate in a collaborative initiative with the University of Manitoba, community stakeholders, and service providers to develop a new educational program aimed at enhancing support for those experiencing gender-based violence.
This innovative program seeks to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application by ensuring that students gain the necessary skills and knowledge to support shelters and service providers effectively. A key focus of the program is making it relevant and applicable to both students and the frontline organizations that provide essential services to individuals affected by domestic and family violence.
As part of the development process, Elders have been brought into the conversation, ensuring that cultural perspectives, traditional knowledge, and holistic approaches are integrated into the curriculum. MAWS has provided critical insights into the skills and expertise that would be ideal for students entering the field, as well as the types of services that would most benefit shelters and their clients. Additionally, MAWS has identified current gaps in service provision and advocated for solutions that could be addressed through enhanced training and education.
A draft of the program is expected to be completed by late spring, at which point it will be shared with participants for further feedback. MAWS looks forward to continuing its involvement in this process, ensuring that the program meets the needs of both students and frontline service providers.
