We were honoured to attend last night’s event hosted by the University Women’s Club of Winnipeg and the Lieutenant Governor of MB, alongside over 50 advocates and organizations working toward a world free from gender-based violence (GBV). The gathering was an essential opportunity to hear from community leaders and experts about progress in this critical area toward research and advocacy, community-driven solutions and innovative approaches that impact individuals and families affected by GBV.
Event Highlights:
- Advancements in Research and Advocacy: Guests were informed about the positive outcomes stemming from recent research and advocacy efforts, including the reduction of wait times for divorce proceedings related to GBV, now down from six years. There has also been progress in shortening wait times for hearings involving the effects of GBV on children, which has had a profound impact on those affected.
- Community-Driven Solutions: The event highlighted innovative, community-based approaches, such as the successful model from Peguis First Nations, where cases are addressed through local community solutions rather than traditional court systems, fostering more culturally relevant and restorative outcomes.
- Reducing Trauma for Children: One of the key takeaways was the importance of reducing trauma in children exposed to GBV. Rather than apprehending children, efforts are being made to prioritize working with parents directly to create safe and supportive home environments, particularly in cases involving GBV.
This event highlights the commitment to improving systems of justice and support for victims of gender-based violence while showcasing innovative and community-driven solutions that are making a difference.
